CVE-2024-9702: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Social Rocket – Social Sharing Plugin for WordPress contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability (CVE-2024-9702) affecting all versions up to and including 1.3.4. The vulnerability was discovered and reported by Wordfence on January 7, 2025 (Wordfence Advisory). The plugin has been closed as of December 31, 2024 due to this security issue (WordPress Plugin).

The vulnerability exists in the plugin's 'socialrocket-floating' shortcode due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes. The severity is rated as MEDIUM with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.4 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) according to NVD, while Wordfence rates it at 6.4 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N). The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation (NVD).

When successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses an affected page, potentially leading to unauthorized data access or manipulation of user sessions (NVD).

As the plugin has been closed due to this security issue, the recommended mitigation is to immediately remove the Social Rocket plugin from WordPress installations. Users should seek alternative social sharing plugins that are actively maintained and security-patched (WordPress Plugin).
