CVE-2025-12028
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

The IndieAuth plugin for WordPress contains a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability (CVE-2025-12028) affecting all versions up to and including 4.5.4. The vulnerability was discovered by Jonas Benjamin Friedli and publicly disclosed on October 23, 2025 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from missing nonce verification in the login_form_indieauth() function and the authorization endpoint at wp-login.php?action=indieauth. This security flaw has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 score of 8.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (NVD).

Impact

If exploited, the vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to force authenticated users to approve OAuth authorization requests for attacker-controlled applications through forged requests. The attacker can subsequently exchange the stolen authorization code for an access token, effectively taking over the victim's account with granted scopes including create, update, and delete permissions (NVD).
