CVE-2025-38347
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A vulnerability was discovered in the Linux kernel's F2FS (Flash-Friendly File System) implementation, identified as CVE-2025-38347. The issue was reported by syzbot and disclosed on July 10, 2025. The vulnerability affects Linux kernel version 6.14.0-rc7 and potentially other versions that use the F2FS filesystem (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from a lack of sanity checking on inode (ino) and extended attribute node ID (xnid) in the F2FS filesystem. When an inode's xattrnid is identical to its iino, it creates a condition where the system attempts to lock the same inode page twice during mknod operations, resulting in a deadlock. This was confirmed through metadata analysis showing the corrupted inode's xattrnid matching its iino value (NVD).

Impact

The vulnerability can cause system hangs due to deadlock conditions, as evidenced by the reported task being blocked for more than 143 seconds. This affects system stability and availability when performing certain filesystem operations on F2FS (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been resolved by implementing sanity checks on ino and xnid values. The fix prevents the deadlock condition by validating these values before performing inode operations (NVD).
