WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The vulnerability CVE-2025-49859 is a Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting the WordPress WP Views Counter plugin versions up to and including 2.0.3. The vulnerability was discovered on May 17, 2025, and publicly disclosed on June 12, 2025. This security issue allows for Stored XSS attacks in the WP Views Counter plugin (Wiz, NVD).

The vulnerability is classified as an Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation (Cross-site Scripting) issue, tracked under CWE-79. It has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 score of 6.5 (Medium) with the following vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L. The vulnerability requires Contributor or higher level privileges to exploit (Patchstack).

When exploited, this vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when guests visit the affected site, potentially compromising user security and website integrity (Wiz).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 2.0.4 of the WP Views Counter plugin. Users are advised to update to version 2.0.4 or later to remediate this security issue.
