WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been identified in Brian Mutende Noptin plugin through version 3.8.7. The vulnerability was discovered on May 21, 2025, and publicly disclosed on June 12, 2025. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2025-49871 and has been classified as CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation (Patchstack, NVD).

The vulnerability has received a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 5.9 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L. This indicates that the vulnerability requires network access, low attack complexity, high privileges, and user interaction for exploitation (Wiz).

When exploited, this vulnerability could allow a malicious actor with administrator privileges to inject malicious scripts into the website. These injected scripts could include redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads that would be executed when guests visit the affected site (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in Noptin version 4.0.0. Users are strongly advised to update to version 4.0.0 or later to remove the vulnerability. Patchstack users can enable auto-update for vulnerable plugins as an additional security measure (Wiz).
