CVE-2026-42616 is a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in ntfs-3g, the read/write NTFS driver for FUSE, triggered when copying index data from the filesystem root to an index block while processing a corrupt or maliciously crafted NTFS filesystem image. The vulnerability affects ntfs-3g packages across multiple Linux distributions, including Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, 24.04 LTS, and 26.04 LTS, as well as Debian and SUSE Linux. It was publicly disclosed around July 15–16, 2026, with vendor advisories and patches following shortly after (Ubuntu Advisory, OSS-Sec). The CVE status is currently listed as "Reserved" with a CVSS category estimate of Medium (Feedly).
The root cause is a heap memory corruption (CWE-122: Heap-based Buffer Overflow) occurring in ntfs-3g's index handling code, specifically when copying index data from the filesystem root to an index block during the processing of a corrupt or maliciously crafted NTFS image. An attacker can exploit this by supplying a specially crafted NTFS filesystem image that triggers the out-of-bounds write during index block processing. The precondition for exploitation is that a local attacker must be able to cause the system to mount or process a malicious NTFS image, which is a realistic scenario on systems that auto-mount removable media (Ubuntu Advisory, OSS-Sec).
Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-42616 could allow a local attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the ntfs-3g process, which may run with elevated privileges depending on system configuration. This poses a risk to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. The vulnerability is part of a broader set of ntfs-3g flaws (CVE-2026-42617, CVE-2026-42618, CVE-2026-46569, CVE-2026-46570, CVE-2026-46572, CVE-2026-56135) disclosed simultaneously, collectively increasing the attack surface for local privilege escalation or code execution (Ubuntu Advisory).
No public proof-of-concept exploit code or in-the-wild exploitation has been reported for CVE-2026-42616 as of the time of this report. The vulnerability requires local access to supply a malicious NTFS image, limiting its remote exploitability. The CVE is detected by Nessus plugins (IDs 327134, 327201, 327650, 329286, 329281) and has been addressed by multiple distribution vendors, suggesting active patch deployment (Tenable, Ubuntu Advisory). There is no current CISA KEV catalog listing or known threat actor attribution for this vulnerability.
/var/log/syslog, dmesg) showing ntfs-3g crashes, segmentation faults, or heap corruption errors when mounting NTFS volumes..img, .iso, .ntfs) in user-accessible directories or temporary folders.Vendors have released patched package versions addressing CVE-2026-42616. Ubuntu users should update to the following versions: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS — ntfs-3g 1:2022.10.3-5ubuntu1.1; Ubuntu 24.04 LTS — ntfs-3g 1:2022.10.3-1.2ubuntu3.2; Ubuntu 22.04 LTS — ntfs-3g 1:2021.8.22-3ubuntu1.4. SUSE has also released a security update (SUSE-SU-2026:3213-1 / 3214-1). A standard system update (apt upgrade or equivalent) is the recommended remediation. As a workaround, administrators can disable auto-mounting of removable NTFS volumes to reduce exposure until patches are applied (Ubuntu Advisory, SUSE Advisory).
The vulnerability was disclosed via the OSS-Security mailing list and promptly covered by Linux security news outlets including LinuxSecurity.com and LinuxCompatible.org. The Solus Linux community also noted the fix in their weekly update roundup. No significant controversy or notable researcher commentary beyond standard patch advisories has been observed (OSS-Sec, LinuxSecurity).
