Building the Future of Space Logistics
Since its founding in 2011, D-Orbit has been on a mission to transform how humanity operates in space. The company completed its first launch in 2020 and has since executed 22 launches, establishing itself as a pioneer in space logistics and satellite services.
As D-Orbit's operations accelerated, so did the scale and complexity of its technology environment. The company keeps growing at a fast pace year after year, expanding the number of systems and cloud resources supporting its mission.
Mission Critical: Securing the Speed of Innovation
D-Orbit controls satellites carrying third-party payloads in orbit for multiple years, making security and reliability not just technical requirements, but a direct commitment to their customers' success. At the same time, engineering teams move quickly to build new systems and capabilities that support the company’s rapid innovation.
“The main challenge is trying to maintain visibility across our systems and cloud infrastructure,” says Stefano Testoni, Head of IT Infrastructure and Corporate Cybersecurity. “Engineering teams continuously build and deploy new technology, which means the environment is constantly evolving.”
As the company’s cloud footprint expanded across AWS and Azure, maintaining clear visibility into systems, configurations, and exposures became increasingly important.
Shadow IT was a concern. We needed a central place to see what's going on with every team, every AWS account, every Azure virtual machine.
Davide Avanzi, Head of Space and Product Security, D-Orbit
D-Orbit’s business depends on staying at the cutting edge of technology. Engineering teams frequently deploy new services and infrastructure to support new missions and capabilities.
“The business runs fast and needs to stay on edge,” Testoni explains. “Security teams need tools that allow them to understand what’s happening across the environment without slowing innovation.”
False positives from traditional scanners created a significant burden for the security team, diverting time and resources away from addressing actual vulnerabilities. Many of these represented theoretical risks that were not actually exploitable in their environment, making it difficult to quickly focus on the vulnerabilities that truly mattered.
Gaining Visibility: From Complexity to Clarity
D-Orbit deployed the Wiz platform to establish centralized visibility across its multi-cloud environment spanning AWS and Azure.
With Wiz, the security team gained a clear and comprehensive view of cloud resources, configurations, and exposures across the entire environment.
“All critical issues were mostly public-facing services that should not be public,” says Avanzi. The security team worked collaboratively with engineering teams to quickly review and remediate the most important findings.
For the first time, D-Orbit had a single source of truth for its cloud security posture.
I measure Wiz in peace of mind and the amount of things I know or can check. If there's something new in the cloud, I know I either saw it in Wiz or can check it in a couple of minutes.
Davide Avanzi, Head of Space and Product Security, D-Orbit
This improved visibility allowed the security team to move from reactive investigation toward proactive monitoring and risk reduction. Instead of spending time searching for issues across multiple systems, the team could see their entire cloud footprint and address potential risks early
Context-Aware Intelligence: Focusing on What Matters
Security teams often face overwhelming volumes of vulnerability findings that lack clear risk context. D-Orbit experienced this challenge as its infrastructure expanded. “The vast majority of detected vulnerabilities cannot be exploited because they're behind firewalls, not accessible or otherwise mitigated”, says Testoni.
Wiz addresses this challenge through context-aware prioritization. Rather than simply identifying vulnerabilities, the platform analyzes how those vulnerabilities interact with the surrounding environment to determine real risk exposure. This intelligence helped the security team focus remediation efforts where they would have the greatest impact. “Wiz is very good at finding issues, maybe too good,” says Avanzi. By reducing noise and highlighting the vulnerabilities that truly mattered, the security team significantly improved the efficiency of its remediation efforts.
Expanding Detection Beyond SIEM
Within two days of deployment, Wiz enhanced D-Orbit's visibility into external reconnaissance activity, including scanning attempts targeting the outer perimeter, helping the security team better understand and profile the threat actors actively probing their infrastructure. This demonstrated the value of cloud-native visibility alongside existing security tools. Traditional SIEM platforms rely on systems sending logs, which can sometimes limit visibility in rapidly evolving cloud.
"SIEMs require extensive configuration and constant fine-tuning," Testoni explains. "Wiz works out of the box, it analyzes the cloud environment directly, giving us an important additional security perspective without the overhead." By analyzing cloud configurations, exposed resources, and environment relationships holistically, Wiz provides an additional layer of detection that complements traditional monitoring approaches.
For D-Orbit, operating critical space infrastructure with satellites that remain in orbit for years, this comprehensive visibility is essential.
Partnership and Future Automation
The collaboration between D-Orbit and Wiz extends beyond platform deployment to ongoing optimization and innovation. The D-Orbit team particularly values Wiz’s flexibility and API capabilities, which enable deeper automation and integration with internal workflows.
Looking ahead, D-Orbit plans to expand automation between security detection and remediation processes.
“We have a dream of direct integration where Wiz can trigger teams to fix solutions automatically,” says Testoni. “For example, if a vulnerability’s mitigation is changing code rather than patching, we want to automatically trigger that request.”
This vision reflects D-Orbit’s broader approach to security: building processes that scale alongside rapid innovation.
Peace of Mind for Mission-Critical Operations
For D-Orbit, the impact of Wiz goes beyond operational metrics. It provides confidence. Operating satellites in orbit and managing global launch operations requires the ability to innovate quickly while maintaining a strong security posture.
As D-Orbit continues scaling its space logistics operations, Wiz helps simplify cloud security, strengthen visibility, and enable the security team to support engineering velocity with confidence.
For a company building the future of space logistics, where satellites operate for years in environments that permit no updates, getting security right on Earth makes all the difference.
With help from Wiz, D-Orbit has the visibility, intelligence, and peace of mind needed to secure both worlds.
