Data is standardized across the fleet and made accessible and shareable through our cloud platform in multiple data standards, making it easy to leverage vessel data for improved efficiency, compliance, and decarbonization. Backed by the Wilhelmsen Group’s 160+ years of maritime experience, Raa Labs combines deep industry expertise with technical excellence to turn vessel data into a strategic asset.
Challenge
Ships often operate autonomously with limited connectivity, making it difficult to collect, unify, and analyze high-frequency operational data from diverse systems and sensors on board.
Tapping into previously isolated vessel systems can introduce new attack vectors and cybersecurity risks for fleets, creating potential vulnerabilities for both onboard and cloud-based infrastructures.
Raa Labs needed to secure its devices and operations without relying on a cumbersome tech stack or extensive manual management.

Navigating maritime digital transformation
The maritime industry is in the midst of a transformation, balancing the parallel goals of digitalization and sustainability. At the forefront of this evolution is Raa Labs, a maritime technology innovator headquartered in Oslo. Founded in 2018 and owned by global maritime leader Wilhelmsen, Raa Labs builds pioneering solutions that help vessel owners and operators harness high-frequency operational data to improve efficiency and drive greener shipping.
Its flagship product, RaaEDGE, is revolutionizing the way vessels collect, unify, and secure data. These compact devices sit onboard ships, acting as digital hubs that bridge operational systems on vessels with cloud technologies on land. Already serving numerous large and advanced vessel owners , RaaEDGE continues to scale further to unlock smarter shipping for the entire industry.
We needed a security tool as adaptable and comprehensive as our vision for RaaEDGE. Wiz gave us exactly that.
Glenn Tvetmarken, Head of Platform Engineering, Raa Labs
“The maritime industry is at a crossroads. Existing fleets need to operate more efficiently, reducing costs and emissions, and to do so, they need to embrace digitalization,” says Eirik Berteig, Head of Strategy at Raa Labs. “But moving from manually reported data to high-frequency sensor data is no small task.”
Ships, often referred to as “floating factories,” are notoriously complex. They operate autonomously for long periods and rely on limited satellite connectivity, making it challenging to manage data across diverse fleets. To protect data collected at the edge and in the cloud, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen RaaEDGE for long-term growth, Raa Labs turned to Wiz.
Securing data in a complex maritime world
When Raa Labs set out to create RaaEDGE, the team knew security needed to be as innovative as the product itself. Each RaaEDGE unit acts as the ship’s digital control center, collecting high-frequency data and linking onboard operations to modern cloud environments. However, since vessels traditionally operate independently with data kept onboard , this connectivity brought new cybersecurity risks.
To address these challenges, Raa Labs engaged with the trusted security partner O3 Cyber, to assess the landscape. Wiz was introduced as a potential security platform, capable of meeting the unusual combination of requirements: multi-cloud visibility, edge runtime compatibility, and developer-oriented security workflows. The solution was validated in environments with intermittent connectivity, resource-constrained edge nodes, and maritime-specific compliance needs, and Wiz delivered full visibility, contextual risk assessment, and actionable insights.
It wasn’t just about securing our cloud workloads — it was about extending cloud-native security to vessels. Without a holistic approach to security, you can quickly create more problems than you solve.
Glenn Tvetmarken, Head of Platform and Infrastructure Engineering, Raa Labs
Raa Labs focuses on building efficient, scalable solutions and instead of stitching together multiple tools or managing a cumbersome security tech stack, the team sought support to automate and simplify security monitoring. The Wiz runtime sensor, which blocks cloud attacks and provides real-time context, stood out for its comprehensive visibility and ability to integrate seamlessly with Raa Labs’ edge environments.
Wiz is like having a fire alarm onboard. You don’t need it often, but when you do, it saves the day

By deploying Wiz’s lightweight runtime sensor on each RaaEDGE edge cluster, the team extended cloud-native security to vessels operating in remote and resource-constrained environments. The Wiz sensor’s efficient design allowed for seamless deployment on K3S clusters, while unified visibility across both edge and cloud environments gave Raa Labs full context on risks, even when vessels were offline.
Wiz’s real-time threat detection capabilities proved especially valuable in challenging maritime conditions. Vessels often experience low bandwidth and intermittent connectivity, but Wiz’s lightweight, metadata-driven sensors handled these constraints with ease, ensuring security didn’t falter during disconnection. Additionally, Wiz automated much of the security process, helping Raa Labs’ team accomplish more with fewer resources. As Tvetmarken says, “With Wiz, our platform team can do the work of a much larger team.”
Meanwhile, during CI/CD and pre-deployment stages, Wiz scans container images and infrastructure to identify risks before software ever ships to RaaEDGE devices. This shift-left approach helps Raa Labs proactively catch issues early, streamline incident response, and strengthen compliance efforts like ISO 27001 as part of their long-term security strategy.
A scalable model for maritime security
By combining leading security solutions with operational efficiency, Raa Labs has redefined what’s possible in maritime digitalization. With Wiz embedded in RaaEDGE, Raa Labs also gained unprecedented control over edge and cloud environments, empowering teams to detect and address threats quickly.
“Wiz gives us the visibility and insights we need across all levels of our operations, from what’s running onboard each vessel to what’s happening in the cloud,” Tvetmarken says. “We never have to guess.”
Security isn’t optional for us. To deliver the value our customers need, we have to put security first. Wiz solves issues that otherwise would’ve required three or four tools to address.
Glenn Tvetmarken, Head of Platform Engineering, Raa Labs
Building RaaEDGE with Wiz has positioned Raa Labs to scale securely across the global maritime industry, working with some of the largest and most sophisticated owners across the world. By embedding Wiz’s lightweight runtime sensors into its edge clusters, Raa Labs delivers continuous security visibility even in a limited resource environment, giving the team confidence to expand deployments at scale without adding operational risk or complexity.
“Our use of Wiz shows the industry that securing edge devices and cloud environments is possible and essential,” Berteig says. “And in the process we have, together with Wiz, done something unprecedented in the industry, pushing the entire sector closer to real-time security while simultaneously delivering high quality vessel data and enabling maritime digitalization.”
