CVE-2016-1000235
JavaScript vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in the Pillbox feature of FuelUX versions prior to 3.15.7. The vulnerability was assigned CVE-2016-1000235 and was disclosed in September 2020. The affected package is the npm package 'fuelux' (GitHub Advisory).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the Pillbox feature where user input is not properly sanitized. By supplying a script as a value for a new pillbox, an attacker could cause arbitrary script execution through cross-site scripting. The issue was addressed by adding a cleanInput method which URI Encodes '<' characters by default (GitHub PR).

Impact

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of the victim's browser session. This could potentially lead to theft of sensitive information, session hijacking, or other malicious actions performed in the context of the affected user.

Exploitability

The vulnerability can be exploited by supplying malicious script content as a value for a new pillbox component. The attack vector requires the ability to input data into a pillbox instance on an affected version of the application.

Mitigation and workarounds

Users should update to FuelUX version 3.15.7 or later which contains the fix for this vulnerability. The fix implements proper input sanitization through a cleanInput method that URI encodes potentially dangerous characters by default (GitHub PR).
