CVE-2020-1530: 
vulnerability analysis and mitigation

An elevation of privilege vulnerability (CVE-2020-1530) was discovered in Windows Remote Access due to improper memory handling. The vulnerability was disclosed on August 11, 2020, as part of Microsoft's Patch Tuesday updates. The flaw affects multiple Windows versions including Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012, and other Windows Server versions (Threatpost, NVD).

The vulnerability received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (High severity) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The flaw was initially associated with CWE-119 but was later reclassified. The vulnerability requires local access and low privilege level to exploit, with no user interaction needed (NVD).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows an attacker to elevate their privileges on the affected system. The attacker could gain elevated access rights, potentially leading to complete system compromise with the ability to execute arbitrary code with higher privileges (NVD, Threatpost).

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would first need to gain code execution capabilities on the target system. Once achieved, they could run a specially crafted application to elevate privileges. Microsoft has assessed the exploitation of this vulnerability as 'less likely' due to the requirement of prior code execution access (NVD, Threatpost).

Microsoft has released security updates to address this vulnerability by correcting how Windows Remote Access handles memory. The fix was initially released during the August 2020 Patch Tuesday updates for most Windows versions, with an out-of-band security update (KB4578013) specifically released for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 (Threatpost).
