Google Chrome vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2020-15971 is a use-after-free vulnerability discovered in the printing functionality of Google Chrome versions prior to 86.0.4240.75. The vulnerability was reported by Jun Kokatsu from Microsoft Browser Vulnerability Research on August 7, 2020 (Chrome Release).

The vulnerability is classified as a use-after-free bug in the printing system of Chrome. It has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.8 (HIGH), with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The vulnerability is tracked under CWE-416 (Use After Free) (NVD).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker who had compromised the renderer process to potentially perform a sandbox escape via a crafted HTML page. This could lead to arbitrary code execution with elevated privileges (NVD).

The vulnerability requires the attacker to first compromise the renderer process and then craft a specific HTML page to trigger the use-after-free condition in the printing functionality. User interaction is required as the attack vector involves rendering malicious content (NVD).

The vulnerability was fixed in Google Chrome version 86.0.4240.75. Users are advised to update to this version or later.
