The Elementor Website Builder plugin for WordPress (CVE-2020-36703) contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability via SVG image uploads in versions up to and including 2.9.7. The vulnerability was discovered by Jerome Bruandet from NinTechNet and was publicly disclosed on April 21, 2020 (WPScan).

The vulnerability stems from a bypass in the SVG sanitizer implementation. Impact

When exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with the upload_files capability to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses the affected page containing the stored web scripts (CVE).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2.9.8 of the Elementor Website Builder plugin. Users are advised to update to this version or later to mitigate the risk (WPScan).
