JavaScript vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2020-7751 is a prototype pollution vulnerability discovered in the node-pathval package. The vulnerability was identified and addressed in December 2020 as part of the Debian 10.7 release update (Debian Update).

The vulnerability exists in the parsePath function within the node-pathval package. The issue occurs when processing path values that could lead to prototype pollution through special property names like 'constructor', 'proto', or 'prototype' (Github PR).

A successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to perform prototype pollution, potentially leading to application security bypasses or other security-related issues in applications using the affected package.

The vulnerability was patched by implementing checks in the parsePath function to prevent the use of dangerous property names. When encountering properties like 'constructor', 'proto', or 'prototype', the function now returns an empty object instead of processing these values (Github PR).
