CVE-2021-1257
Trellix Agent vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A high-severity security vulnerability (CVE-2021-1257) exists in the web-based management interface of Cisco DNA Center Software. The vulnerability, which carries a CVSS score of 7.1, affects versions prior to 2.1.1.0 and allows cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks due to insufficient CSRF protections (Cisco Advisory, Threatpost).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in Cisco Digital Network Architecture (DNA) Center, a centralized network-management and orchestration platform. The DNA Center allows administrators to provision and configure all network devices using AI and ML for proactive monitoring and troubleshooting. The insufficient CSRF protections in the web-based management interface could allow manipulation of authenticated users into executing malicious actions without their awareness (Cisco Advisory).

Impact

A successful exploit could allow an attacker to perform arbitrary actions on the device with the privileges of the authenticated user. These actions include modifying device configurations, disconnecting user sessions, and executing Command Runner commands (Cisco Advisory).

Exploitability

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by socially engineering a web-based management user into following a specially crafted link, typically through phishing emails or chat messages. When the authenticated user clicks on the malicious link, the attacker can perform arbitrary actions with the user's privileges (Threatpost).

Mitigation and workarounds

Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability in DNA Center Software releases 2.1.1.0, 2.1.2.0, 2.1.2.3, and 2.1.2.4 and later. There are no workarounds available for this vulnerability. System updates can be installed using the System Updates feature of the software (Cisco Advisory).
