CVE-2021-1880: 
macOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2021-1880 is a security vulnerability in Apple's ImageIO component that affects macOS Big Sur (versions up to 11.3) and watchOS (versions up to 7.4). The vulnerability was discovered by Xingwei Lin of Ant Security Light-Year Lab and was patched in updates released on April 26, 2021 (Apple Support, Apple WatchOS).

The vulnerability exists in the ImageIO component where processing a maliciously crafted image may lead to arbitrary code execution. This issue was addressed with improved checks in the affected systems. The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 7.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (NVD).

The vulnerability allows processing of maliciously crafted images to potentially lead to arbitrary code execution on the affected system. This means an attacker could potentially execute malicious code with the privileges of the user running the application that processes the image (Apple Support).

Apple has addressed this vulnerability by implementing improved checks in macOS Big Sur 11.3 and watchOS 7.4. Users should update their systems to these versions or later to protect against this vulnerability (Apple Support, Apple WatchOS).
