Overview
Microsoft Power BI Report Server contained an Information Disclosure vulnerability identified as CVE-2021-26859, disclosed on March 11, 2021. The vulnerability affected Power BI Report Server versions 15.0.1103.234 and 15.0.1104.300 (NVD).
Technical details
The vulnerability exists in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services due to incorrect handling of page requests. An internal API used for large PBIX file requests allows a file path property, where the reporting services process may attempt to write a temporary file to a remote path. The vulnerability received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.5 (MEDIUM) from NIST and 7.7 (HIGH) from Microsoft (NVD).
Impact
If successfully exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute code in the context of the Report Server service account. If the NTLM hash is broken on a target computer, the attacker could obtain the credentials for the report server process (Microsoft Support).
Mitigation and workarounds
Microsoft released a security update to address this vulnerability on March 9, 2021. The update patches Power BI Report Server to version 15.0.1104.310 (build 1.9.7709.41358). Users must have any version of Power BI Report Server (October 2020) installed to apply this update (Microsoft Support).
