CVE-2021-28658
Django vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2021-28658 is a directory traversal vulnerability discovered in Django's MultiPartParser component that affects versions 2.2 before 2.2.20, 3.0 before 3.0.14, and 3.1 before 3.1.8. The vulnerability was disclosed on April 6, 2021, and allows attackers to perform directory traversal via uploaded files with specially crafted file names. Notably, the built-in upload handlers were not affected by this vulnerability (Django Blog).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in Django's MultiPartParser component which failed to properly validate file names during file uploads. This could allow an attacker to perform directory traversal attacks using specially crafted file names. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.3 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, indicating that it can be exploited remotely without requiring privileges or user interaction (NVD).

Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to disclosure of sensitive information through directory traversal attacks. The attack allows unauthorized access to files outside the intended directory structure, potentially exposing sensitive system files or data (NetApp Advisory).

Exploitability

The vulnerability can be exploited remotely by an attacker who can upload files with specially crafted filenames to a Django application. The attack requires no special privileges or user interaction, making it relatively straightforward to exploit in systems that haven't been patched (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

The Django team has released security updates to address this vulnerability: Django 3.1.8, Django 3.0.14, and Django 2.2.20. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to these patched versions as soon as possible. The fixes have been applied to Django's main branch and the 3.2, 3.1, 3.0, and 2.2 release branches (Django Blog).

Community reactions

The vulnerability was responsibly disclosed by security researcher Dennis Brinkrolf. Following the disclosure, major Linux distributions and software vendors quickly released security advisories and patches, including Debian, Red Hat, and NetApp (Debian LTS, NetApp Advisory).
