NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2021-29957 is a security vulnerability discovered in Mozilla Thunderbird's OpenPGP implementation. The vulnerability was reported by Cure53 and fixed in Thunderbird version 78.10.2, released on May 17, 2021. The issue affects the handling of MIME encoded emails containing OpenPGP inline signed or encrypted message parts (Mozilla Advisory).

The vulnerability occurs when a MIME encoded email contains both an OpenPGP inline signed or encrypted message part and additional unprotected parts. In such cases, Thunderbird failed to properly indicate that only portions of the message were protected, potentially leading users to incorrectly assume the entire message was encrypted (Mozilla Advisory, Red Hat).

The impact of this vulnerability is rated as low. The main risk is that users might erroneously assume an entire email was encrypted when only parts of it were actually protected, potentially leading to false assumptions about message security (Mozilla Advisory).

The vulnerability was fixed in Thunderbird version 78.10.2. The fix includes improvements to the logic for detecting encrypted content and checking for unencrypted parts in messages. When parts of a message are decrypted, the whole message is now checked for unprotected sections, and users are properly alerted about partially unprotected information (Mozilla Advisory).
