Google Chrome vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2021-30511 is a security vulnerability discovered in Google Chrome's Tab Groups feature affecting versions prior to 90.0.4430.212. The vulnerability was disclosed in May 2021 and affects the Chrome browser across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms (Chrome Release).

The vulnerability is classified as an out-of-bounds read vulnerability (CWE-125) in the Tab Groups functionality of Google Chrome. It has received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.1 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H (NVD).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows an attacker who convinces a user to install a malicious extension to perform an out-of-bounds memory read via a crafted HTML page. This could potentially lead to information disclosure and system crashes (NVD).

The vulnerability has been patched in Chrome version 90.0.4430.212. Users and administrators are advised to update to this version or later. Various Linux distributions have also released security updates to address this vulnerability, including Fedora and Gentoo (Gentoo Advisory, Fedora Update).
