CVE-2021-3593
NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

An invalid pointer initialization issue was found in the SLiRP networking implementation of QEMU, identified as CVE-2021-3593. The vulnerability exists in the udp6input() function and could occur while processing a UDP packet that is smaller than the size of the 'udphdr' structure. This vulnerability was discovered in June 2021 and affects libslirp versions prior to 4.6.0 (Debian Tracker, [GitHub Lab](https://securitylab.github.com/advisories/GHSL-2021-078081-slirp/)).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from an invalid pointer initialization in the udp6_input() function of the SLiRP networking implementation. When processing a UDP packet smaller than the size of the 'udphdr' structure, the function attempts to use memory from outside the working mbuf buffer without proper size verification. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS score of 3.8 (LOW) with the vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N (NetApp Security).

Impact

The vulnerability can lead to out-of-bounds read access or indirect host memory disclosure to the guest. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to data confidentiality, as it could allow an attacker to access sensitive information from the host system (Debian Tracker).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability was fixed in libslirp version 4.6.0. Users are advised to upgrade to this version or later. Multiple distributions have released security updates to address this vulnerability, including Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora (Debian Tracker, Ubuntu Security).
