NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The binary MP4Box in Gpac 1.0.1 has a null pointer dereference vulnerability in the mpgviddmx_process function in reframe_mpgvid.c, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service. This vulnerability is possibly due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2021-40566 (NVD).

The vulnerability exists in the mpgviddmx_process function within reframe_mpgvid.c. The issue occurs when processing video data with insufficient bytes to parse the start code, leading to a negative-size parameter being passed to memcpy function. The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 5.5 MEDIUM (Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) (NVD).

When exploited, this vulnerability can cause a denial of service through a segmentation fault caused by null pointer dereference. The impact is limited to availability, with no direct impact on confidentiality or integrity of the system (NVD).

The vulnerability has been patched in the GPAC codebase with commit 5f2c2a16d30229b6241f02fa28e3d6b810d64858, which adds additional checks for remaining bytes before parsing start codes. For Debian systems, the fix has been included in version 1.0.1+dfsg1-4+deb11u2 (Debian Security).
