Homebrew vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2021-40648 affects man2html and involves a heap overflow vulnerability. The issue was discovered in 2021 and affects the man2html package (Debian Bug).

Technical details

The vulnerability allows an attacker to create a filename of specific length (132 'A' characters) that can overwrite the previous size parameter of the next chunk and the fd, bk, fdnextsize, bknextsize of the current chunk in the heap. This occurs at line 3155 of 'man2html.c'. When the next chunk is freed later at line 3191, it results in freeing an arbitrary amount of memory (GitHub Gist).

Impact

The vulnerability allows for heap memory manipulation, though the exact impact appears limited as the program does not crash when exploited. The issue affects memory management but does not appear to lead to code execution (GitHub Gist).
