NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2022-0443 is a Use-After-Free vulnerability discovered in GitHub repository vim/vim prior to version 8.2. The vulnerability affects the enter_buffer() function in src/buffer.c, which could lead to memory corruption issues (NVD, Debian).

The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The issue occurs in the buffer handling mechanism where the code attempts to use memory that has been previously freed, specifically in the enter_buffer() function of src/buffer.c (NVD, Fedora).

The vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with user privileges, cause a denial of service through application crash, or expose sensitive information through memory corruption (Debian, Gentoo).

The vulnerability requires local access and user interaction to be exploited. While the attack complexity is low, the attacker needs no privileges to execute the attack (NVD).

The vulnerability was fixed in Vim version 8.2.4281 through commit 9b4a80a. Users are advised to upgrade to this version or later. Multiple Linux distributions have released security updates to address this vulnerability, including Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Gentoo (GitHub, Debian).
