A Insecure Temporary File vulnerability (CVE-2022-21945) was discovered in cscreen of openSUSE Factory. The vulnerability affects cscreen version 1.2-1.3 and prior versions. The issue was identified in the usage of a fixed path /tmp/cscreen.debug in the script /usr/bin/cscreenupdateconfig.sh (SUSE Bugzilla).
The vulnerability stems from the cscreen package using a fixed path /tmp/cscreen.debug in the script /usr/bin/cscreenupdateconfig.sh. The script writes debug information to this fixed location without proper security controls. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 6.1 MEDIUM (Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H) according to NVD assessment (NVD).
Without symlink protection, this vulnerability could be exploited as a local Denial of Service (DoS) vector against the system. By placing a FIFO in the vulnerable location, it could lead to a dedicated DoS and potential information leak against the update script (SUSE Bugzilla).
The issue has been fixed by changing the debug file location to /run/cscreen/ with appropriate access controls. The fix was implemented upstream in the cscreen repository (SUSE Bugzilla).
