NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2022-2257 is a security vulnerability discovered in Vim text editor prior to version 9.0. The vulnerability was disclosed on June 29, 2022, affecting the msg_outtrans_special function where the software fails to perform proper bounds checks when processing a menu item with the only modifier (Red Hat CVE, Debian Tracker).

The vulnerability is characterized as an out-of-bounds read issue in the msg_outtrans_special function. The flaw occurs when processing menu items with only modifiers, where the software fails to properly check for NUL characters. This was addressed in patch 9.0.0009 by adding a check for NUL characters in the code (Vim Commit).

The vulnerability could potentially lead to a denial of service condition when processing specially crafted input. The impact is considered relatively low as it primarily affects the CLI tool with no direct security implications beyond potential crashes (Debian Tracker).

The vulnerability was fixed in Vim version 9.0.0009. Users are advised to upgrade to this version or later. For Debian systems, fixed versions are available in bookworm (2:9.0.1378-2+deb12u2) and later releases. For Fedora systems, the fix is included in vim-9.0.049-1 (Fedora Update).
