CVE-2022-2592
GitLab vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A lack of length validation in Snippet descriptions in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions prior to 15.1.6, 15.2 prior to 15.2.4 and 15.3 prior to 15.3.2 allows an authenticated attacker to create a maliciously large Snippet which when requested with or without authentication places excessive load on the server, potentially leading to Denial of Service (GitLab Release, NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2022-2592 and has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 6.5 (MEDIUM) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H. The issue stems from improper validation of Snippet description lengths, which can be exploited by authenticated users to create maliciously large snippets (NVD).

Impact

When exploited, this vulnerability can lead to Denial of Service conditions on the GitLab server. The impact occurs when the maliciously large Snippet is requested, regardless of whether the request comes from an authenticated or unauthenticated user, placing excessive load on the server (GitLab Release).

Exploitability

The vulnerability requires authentication to exploit, as an attacker must have the ability to create Snippets in the GitLab instance. However, once created, the malicious Snippet can be triggered by any user, authenticated or not, making it a potentially significant attack vector (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed in GitLab versions 15.1.6, 15.2.4, and 15.3.2. Users are strongly recommended to upgrade to these versions or later to mitigate the vulnerability. The fix was released as part of a critical security release (GitLab Release).
