CVE-2022-36536
Homebrew vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

An issue in the component post_applogin.php of Super Flexible Software GmbH & Co. KG Syncovery 9 for Linux v9.47x and below allows attackers to escalate privileges via creating crafted session tokens. The vulnerability was discovered in July 2022 and affects the login functionality of Syncovery's backup and sync tool (MITRE CVE, MGM Security).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from an insecure session token generation method where tokens are created using a predictable format: base64(MM/dd/yyyy HH:mm:ss). This implementation makes it possible for attackers to brute-force valid session tokens (MGM Security).

Impact

Upon successful exploitation, attackers can gain full administrative access to the web GUI of Syncovery, leading to privilege escalation. This access could potentially compromise the entire backup and synchronization system (MGM Security).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability was fixed in Syncovery version 9.48j. Users running version 9.47x or below, including all versions of branch 8, should upgrade to version 9.48j or later to mitigate this security issue (MGM Security).
