WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in the WordPress News Announcement Scroll plugin versions 8.8.8 and below. The vulnerability was identified on September 27, 2022, and publicly disclosed on November 17, 2022. This security issue affects administrators and users with high privileges in WordPress installations (Patchstack).

The vulnerability occurs because the plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape some of its settings, potentially allowing high-privilege users such as administrators to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks, even in scenarios where the unfilteredhtml capability is disallowed (such as in multisite setups). The vulnerability has been fixed in version 9.0.0 of the News Announcement Scroll plugin. Users are advised to update to version 9.0.0 or later to remove the vulnerability.
