NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

Bento4 v1.6.0-639 was discovered to contain a heap overflow vulnerability via the AP4_BitReader::ReadBits function in mp4mux. This vulnerability was assigned CVE-2022-41428 and was disclosed in October 2022 (NIST).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the AP4_BitReader::ReadBits function within the mp4mux component of Bento4. When processing certain input, the function can trigger a heap-buffer-overflow condition, allowing reads beyond allocated memory boundaries. The issue occurs when reading bits from a malformed input stream, which can lead to memory corruption (GitHub Issue).
