PHP vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

Backdrop CMS version 1.22.0 contains an Unrestricted File Upload vulnerability in the themes component that allows attackers to achieve Remote Code Execution. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on September 27, 2022 (GrimTheRipper Blog).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the theme installer functionality on the Appearance page. An attacker with admin privileges can exploit this vulnerability by uploading malicious files disguised as theme files through the Manual Installation option. The application fails to properly validate the uploaded zip files, allowing arbitrary file upload (GrimTheRipper Blog).

Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows attackers to upload and execute malicious code on the affected system, potentially leading to complete system compromise through remote code execution. The attacker can gain unauthorized access to the system and execute arbitrary commands (GrimTheRipper Blog).

Exploitability

The vulnerability requires administrative privileges to exploit. An attacker needs to have access to the admin interface to reach the theme installation functionality. A proof of concept exists demonstrating the ability to upload a web shell and establish a reverse shell connection (GrimTheRipper Blog).
