Overview

Backdrop CMS version 1.22.0 contains an Unrestricted File Upload vulnerability in the themes component that allows attackers to achieve Remote Code Execution. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on September 27, 2022 (GrimTheRipper Blog).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the theme installer functionality on the Appearance page. An attacker with admin privileges can exploit this vulnerability by uploading malicious files disguised as theme files through the Manual Installation option. The application fails to properly validate the uploaded zip files, allowing arbitrary file upload (GrimTheRipper Blog).

Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows attackers to upload and execute malicious code on the affected system, potentially leading to complete system compromise through remote code execution.
