CVE-2022-43143
NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in Beekeeper Studio version 3.6.6. The vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary web scripts or HTML through a crafted payload injected into the error modal container (NIST NVD, GitHub Issue).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the modal container component of Beekeeper Studio which displays user interaction validation messages. Due to insufficient sanitization of modal contents, attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when the error modal is displayed. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 9.6 CRITICAL with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H (NIST NVD).

Impact

The vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary web scripts or HTML in the context of the application. This could lead to remote code execution through the modal container, potentially compromising the user's system. The attack can be triggered through various functions that use the error modal, including data insertion and table creation operations (GitHub Issue).

Exploitability

The vulnerability can be exploited by creating a malicious MySQL server that spoofs user's modal output. When a user interacts with this server through Beekeeper Studio, the attacker can inject malicious scripts that execute in the context of the error modal. The attack continues until the modal is deactivated (GitHub Issue).
