CVE-2022-43650: 
WinRAR vulnerability analysis and mitigation

This vulnerability (CVE-2022-43650) affects RARLAB WinRAR version 6.11.0.0. The vulnerability was discovered and reported to the vendor on November 21, 2022, with a coordinated public release on January 20, 2023. The vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of WinRAR. User interaction is required for exploitation, as the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file (ZDI Advisory).

The vulnerability exists within the parsing of ZIP files. Specifically, crafted data in a ZIP file can trigger a read past the end of an allocated buffer, classified as an Out-of-bounds Read vulnerability (CWE-125). The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.1 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H by NIST NVD (NVD).

When successfully exploited, this vulnerability can lead to sensitive information disclosure. Additionally, an attacker can potentially leverage this vulnerability in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process (ZDI Advisory).

RARLAB has issued an update to correct this vulnerability. Users are advised to update to the latest version of WinRAR. The fix was included in WinRAR 6.20 Beta 3, released on December 15, 2022 (WinRAR News).
