WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Rate my Post WordPress plugin before version 3.3.9 contains a security vulnerability identified as CVE-2022-4673. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on December 27, 2022, affecting the plugin's shortcode functionality. This security issue impacts WordPress installations running Rate my Post plugin versions prior to 3.3.9 (WPScan).

The vulnerability stems from improper validation and escaping of shortcode attributes in the plugin. The security flaw has been assigned a CVSS score of 6.8 (medium severity) and is classified as a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability, corresponding to CWE-79. The technical issue specifically relates to the [ratemypost-result] shortcode implementation (WPScan).

The vulnerability allows users with privileges as low as Contributor to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks against the website. When successfully exploited, attackers can inject malicious JavaScript code that executes in visitors' browsers, potentially leading to session hijacking, defacement, or theft of sensitive information (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 3.3.9 of the Rate my Post plugin. Website administrators are strongly advised to update to this version or later to mitigate the security risk (WPScan).
