CVE-2022-4749: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2022-4749 affects the Posts List Designer by Category WordPress plugin versions before 3.2. The vulnerability was discovered and publicly disclosed on January 6, 2023. The issue exists in the plugin's shortcode functionality where it fails to properly validate and escape certain attributes (WPScan, NVD).

The vulnerability is classified as a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue with a CVSS score of 6.8 (medium). The technical root cause is the plugin's failure to validate and escape shortcode attributes before outputting them back in the page. This vulnerability falls under the OWASP Top 10 category A7: Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and is identified as CWE-79 (WPScan).

The vulnerability allows users with roles as low as contributor to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks that could be executed against high-privilege users such as administrators. This could potentially lead to unauthorized actions being performed in the context of the administrator's session (WPScan).

A proof of concept exploit has been documented using a malicious shortcode: [pld_post_list design='" onmouseover="alert(1)" style="background:red;"']. The vulnerability can be exploited by users with contributor-level access or higher (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 3.2 of the Posts List Designer by Category plugin. Users are advised to update to this version or later to mitigate the security risk (WPScan).
