CVE-2022-47663: 
NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

GPAC MP4box version 2.1-DEV-rev649-ga8f438d20 was found to contain a buffer overflow vulnerability in the h263dmx_process function located in filters/reframe_h263.c at line 609. The vulnerability was discovered in December 2022 and was assigned CVE-2022-47663 (NVD, Debian).

The vulnerability is classified as a heap buffer overflow with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH). The attack vector is local (AV:L) with low attack complexity (AC:L), requiring no privileges (PR:N) but user interaction (UI:R). The scope is unchanged (S:U) with high impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:H/I:H/A:H) (NVD).

The buffer overflow vulnerability could lead to denial of service conditions or potentially allow for arbitrary code execution. When exploited, the vulnerability causes a READ operation of size 4294967295 at an unauthorized memory location, which can crash the application (GitHub).

A proof of concept exploit has been publicly disclosed. The vulnerability can be triggered by importing specifically crafted MP4 files using the MP4Box utility. The issue was demonstrated using the command './MP4Box import -cat poc_bof13.mp4' which results in a heap buffer overflow (GitHub).

The vulnerability has been fixed in GPAC version 2.2.0 and later releases. For Debian users, the fix is available in version 1.0.1+dfsg1-4+deb11u2 for the stable distribution (bullseye) (Debian).
