CVE-2022-48918 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's iwlwifi driver that occurs when "debugfs=off" is used on the kernel command line. The vulnerability was discovered in 2022 and affects Linux kernel versions from 5.12 up to (excluding) 5.15.27 and from 5.16 up to (excluding) 5.16.13. The issue involves the iwiwifi's mvm module using an invalid/unchecked debugfs_dir pointer, which can lead to a NULL pointer dereference (NVD, Red Hat).

The vulnerability is classified as a NULL Pointer Dereference (CWE-476) issue. When debugfs is disabled via the kernel command line parameter "debugfs=off", the iwlwifi mvm module attempts to access the debugfs_dir pointer without proper validation, resulting in a kernel NULL pointer dereference at address 0x4f. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.5 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H (NVD).

The vulnerability can result in a denial of service condition through a kernel crash when the debugfs feature is disabled. This affects system availability by causing a kernel NULL pointer dereference, which triggers a system panic (Red Hat).

The issue has been fixed by adding proper validation of the debugfs_dir pointer before use. The fix involves checking the debugfs_dir pointer for errors before attempting to use it. The patch has been merged into the Linux kernel (Kernel Patch).
