CVE-2022-50545
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A memory leak vulnerability was discovered in the Linux kernel's r6040 network driver (CVE-2022-50545). The issue occurs in the probe and remove processes where a PHY device is not properly disconnected, leading to memory leaks reported by kmemleak (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from improper device disconnection in the r6040 driver. During the probe process, when a PHY device is allocated and registered, its reference count increases to 3. When connecting to the first PHY device, the count increases to 4. However, during error handling or device removal, the PHY device is not properly disconnected, leaving a reference count of 1 and causing memory leaks (NVD).

Impact

The vulnerability results in memory leaks in the Linux kernel when using the r6040 network driver. While memory leaks can gradually degrade system performance and stability, this particular issue appears to have limited direct security impact (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

The issue has been fixed by adding phy_disconnect() calls when removing an r6040 device or handling errors after successful r6040_mii probe. This ensures proper cleanup of PHY device references (NVD).
