NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2023-21286 is a security vulnerability discovered in the RemoteViews.java component of Android's framework, specifically in the visitUris function. The vulnerability was disclosed in August 2023 and affects Android versions 11.0 through 13.0. The issue stems from a missing permission check that could potentially reveal images across different users (NVD, CVE).

The vulnerability exists in the visitUris function of RemoteViews.java, where a missing permission check could allow unauthorized access to images across different users. The issue has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH), with the following vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The vulnerability requires local access but has low attack complexity and requires no user interaction for exploitation (NVD).

If exploited, this vulnerability could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to reveal images belonging to other users through notifications, as the URI in nested views was not being properly checked (Android Patch).

Google has addressed this vulnerability by implementing proper URI checking in the visitUris function for RemoteViews ViewGroupAction. The fix was included in the Android Security Bulletin for August 2023.
