CVE-2023-21988: 
VirtualBox vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Oracle VM VirtualBox, in versions prior to 6.1.44 and prior to 7.0.8, contains a vulnerability related to GPA request handling. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2023-21988 and was disclosed as part of Oracle's April 2023 Critical Patch Update (Oracle CPU, ZDI Advisory).

The vulnerability stems from improper initialization of memory prior to accessing it during the handling of GPA requests. It has been assigned a CVSS base score of 3.8 (LOW) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N, indicating local access is required for exploitation (NVD).

A successful exploitation of this vulnerability could result in unauthorized read access to a subset of Oracle VM VirtualBox accessible data. The vulnerability affects the confidentiality of the system but does not impact integrity or availability (Oracle CPU).

The vulnerability requires a local attacker with low privileges and logon access to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes. An attacker must first obtain the ability to execute high-privileged code on the target guest system to exploit this vulnerability (ZDI Advisory).

Oracle has released security patches to address this vulnerability in their April 2023 Critical Patch Update. Users are advised to upgrade to VirtualBox version 6.1.44 or 7.0.8 or later versions (Oracle CPU).
