Technical details

The vulnerability allows a malicious maintainer to escalate other users to Owners in a project by importing members from another project where those users have Owner status. This security flaw has been assigned a medium severity rating with a CVSS v3.1 score of 4.4 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N) (GitLab Security Release).

Impact

The vulnerability enables privilege escalation where a maintainer can gain owner-level access, allowing them to perform critical actions such as deleting projects, archiving projects, transferring projects to another namespace, and deleting merge requests (GitLab Issue).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been patched in GitLab versions 15.10.8, 15.11.7, and 16.0.2. Organizations are strongly recommended to upgrade to these or newer versions immediately to mitigate the risk (GitLab Security Release).
