Foxit PDF Reader vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2023-27329 is a critical security vulnerability discovered in Foxit PDF Reader and Editor that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations. The vulnerability was disclosed on March 9, 2023, and affects multiple versions of Foxit PDF Reader and Foxit PDF Editor (previously named Foxit PhantomPDF) on Windows platforms (ZDI Advisory, Security Online).

The vulnerability stems from improper handling of Annotation objects within the software. Specifically, the flaw exists due to the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object, resulting in a use-after-free condition. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS score of 7.8 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H), indicating a high severity level (ZDI Advisory).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process on the affected system. The vulnerability requires user interaction to be exploited, specifically the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The attack can be triggered when users are enticed into opening specially crafted PDF files (ZDI Advisory, Security Online).
