CVE-2023-29931
PHP vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

laravel-s version 3.7.35 was found to contain a Local File Inclusion (LFI) vulnerability via /src/Illuminate/Laravel.php. The vulnerability was discovered in March 2023 and assigned identifier CVE-2023-29931. The affected component is the Laravel-s package, which is available through the Composer package manager (NVD, CVE).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the handleStatic function within /src/Illuminate/Laravel.php when the 'handle_static' setting is enabled. The issue stems from improper validation of the request URI, allowing path traversal through URL-encoded characters. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 9.8 (CRITICAL) with vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (NVD).

Impact

If exploited, this vulnerability allows remote attackers to include and access arbitrary files on the system through path traversal techniques. This could lead to exposure of sensitive system files and potential system compromise (FortiGuard).

Exploitability

The vulnerability can be exploited by sending specially crafted HTTP requests containing path traversal sequences. A proof of concept demonstrates that an attacker can access system files using curl with the path-as-is option, for example: 'curl --path-as-is "http://127.0.0.1:5200/../../../../../../etc/passwd"' (GitHub Issue).

Mitigation and workarounds

Users should upgrade to Laravel-s version 3.7.36 or later which contains patches for this vulnerability (FortiGuard).
