CVE-2023-33320: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in the Mohammad I. Okfie WP-Hijri WordPress plugin versions 1.5.1 and below. The vulnerability was reported on February 2, 2023, by Le Ngoc Anh and was officially published on May 22, 2023, with the identifier CVE-2023-33320 (Patchstack).

The vulnerability occurs because the plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape the month and year parameters before outputting them back in the page. This security flaw has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.1 (Medium) by NIST and 7.1 (High) by Patchstack. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation (WPScan, NVD).

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when visitors access the affected site, potentially compromising the security of high-privilege users such as administrators (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 1.5.2 of the WP-Hijri plugin. Website administrators are strongly advised to update to this version or later to resolve the security issue. For users unable to update immediately, Patchstack has issued a virtual patch to mitigate this issue by blocking potential attacks (Patchstack).
