CVE-2023-4135: 
NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A heap out-of-bounds memory read vulnerability (CVE-2023-4135) was discovered in the virtual NVMe device in QEMU. The vulnerability was reported on August 2, 2023, and affects QEMU versions prior to 8.1.0. The flaw exists due to QEMU's failure to validate an offset provided by the guest before computing a host heap pointer, which is used for copying data back to the guest (ZDI Advisory, NVD).

The vulnerability is classified with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.5 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N. The flaw specifically exists within the NVMe virtual device implementation, where improper validation of user-supplied data can result in a read past the end of an allocated buffer (NVD, ZDI Advisory).

When successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to disclose sensitive information from arbitrary heap memory relative to an allocated buffer. The impact is limited to information disclosure, with no direct impact on system integrity or availability (ZDI Advisory).

QEMU has released version 8.1.0 to address this vulnerability. Users are advised to upgrade to this version or later to mitigate the risk. The fix was implemented through a patch that properly validates the offset provided by the guest (Red Hat CVE).
