Technical details

The vulnerability stems from improper validation and escaping of shortcode attributes before they are output in pages or posts where the shortcode is embedded. This security flaw has been assigned CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation). Impact

The vulnerability allows users with contributor privileges and above to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks. This could enable malicious actors to inject harmful scripts, including redirects and advertisements, which would execute when visitors access the affected site (Patchstack).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 1.1.0 of the plugin. Users are advised to update to version 1.1.0 or later to remediate the issue. Additionally, Patchstack has issued a virtual patch to mitigate this vulnerability by blocking potential attacks until users can update to the fixed version (Patchstack).
