WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in the WordPress Site Offline Or Coming Soon Or Maintenance Mode plugin, affecting versions up to 1.5.6. The vulnerability was reported on August 25, 2023, and publicly disclosed on November 29, 2023. This security issue impacts the plugin developed by Chandra Shekhar Sahu (Patchstack).

The vulnerability is classified as a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue, specifically an Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation. It has received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 4.8 (Medium) from NIST with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, while Patchstack assigned it a score of 5.9 (Medium). The vulnerability requires high privileges and user interaction to exploit, with the attack vector being network-accessible (NVD).

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow a malicious actor to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when guests visit the affected site (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 1.5.7 of the plugin. Users are advised to update to version 1.5.7 or later to remove the vulnerability. Patchstack users can enable auto-update for vulnerable plugins (Patchstack).
