CVE-2023-50828: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in David Vongries Ultimate Dashboard – Custom WordPress Dashboard plugin, tracked as CVE-2023-50828. The vulnerability affects versions up to 3.7.11 and was publicly disclosed on December 19, 2023. The issue allows high-privilege users such as administrators to perform Stored XSS attacks, even when the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed, such as in multisite setups (Patchstack, WPScan).

The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) and received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.9 (Medium) from Patchstack and 4.8 (Medium) from NIST. The vulnerability stems from improper sanitization and escaping of certain plugin settings. The attack vector is network-accessible (AV:N) with low attack complexity (AC:L), requiring high privileges (PR:H) and user interaction (UI:R) (NVD).

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when guests visit the affected site (Patchstack).

The vulnerability requires high privileges (administrator access) to exploit, which somewhat limits its potential impact. The security issue has been assessed as having a low severity impact and is considered unlikely to be exploited (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 3.7.12 of the Ultimate Dashboard plugin. Users are advised to update to version 3.7.12 or later to remove the vulnerability. Patchstack users can enable auto-update functionality for vulnerable plugins (Patchstack).
