WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The vulnerability (CVE-2023-51689) is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue discovered in the Easy Video Player WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to 1.2.2.10. The vulnerability was discovered by Ngô Thiên An (ancorn_) and publicly disclosed on December 27, 2023. The issue specifically affects the WordPress plugin 'Easy Video Player' and allows users with contributor-level privileges or above to perform Stored XSS attacks (Patchstack, WPScan).

The vulnerability stems from improper validation and escaping of the ratio_code attribute in the evp_embed_video shortcode. When this shortcode is embedded in a page, the unvalidated input is output directly, enabling potential XSS attacks. The vulnerability has received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.4 (Medium) from NIST and 6.5 (Medium) from Patchstack. The CVSS vector string is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, indicating network accessibility, low attack complexity, and required user interaction (NVD).

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when visitors access the affected pages. The impact is particularly concerning as it affects the integrity and confidentiality of the website content (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 1.2.2.11 of the Easy Video Player plugin. Website administrators are advised to update to this version or later to remove the vulnerability.
