CVE-2023-51767
Wolfi vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

OpenSSH through version 9.6 contains a vulnerability that could allow row hammer attacks for authentication bypass. The vulnerability exists because the integer value of 'authenticated' in mmanswerauthpassword does not resist flips of a single bit when common types of DRAM are used. This vulnerability is specifically applicable to scenarios where the attacker has user privileges and shares physical hardware with the victim (NVD, Ubuntu).

Technical details

The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 7.0 (HIGH) with the vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The attack requires local access, has high attack complexity, needs low privileges, and no user interaction. The scope is unchanged, but potential impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability is high (NVD, NetApp).

Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to authentication bypass, potentially allowing unauthorized access to systems. The impact includes possible disclosure of sensitive information, addition or modification of data, or Denial of Service (DoS) (NetApp).

Mitigation and workarounds

The upstream OpenSSH developers have chosen not to address this issue as they do not consider it a bug in OpenSSH itself, stating that the vulnerability needs to be addressed at the hardware platform level rather than in OpenSSH. Currently, there are no specific workarounds available (Ubuntu, Debian).

Community reactions

The security community and vendors have shown varied responses to this vulnerability. While some vendors like NetApp have issued advisories and are investigating their products, others like Ubuntu and Debian have marked this issue as 'ignored' based on upstream OpenSSH developers' assessment that this is not a practical security concern in real-world configurations (NetApp, Ubuntu).
