CVE-2023-53573
Linux Debian vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

In the Linux kernel, a vulnerability (CVE-2023-53573) has been identified affecting the clock (clk) subsystem, specifically in the rs9 component. The issue was discovered and disclosed in October 2023. The vulnerability affects Linux kernel systems using the rs9 clock driver (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from disabling the cache in commit 2ff4ba9e3702 ("clk: rs9: Fix I2C accessors") without removing cache synchronization in the resume path. This results in a kernel panic as map->cacheops is unset due to REGCACHENONE. The issue specifically relates to the handling of cache operations during suspend/resume cycles (NVD).

Impact

When exploited, this vulnerability causes a kernel panic during system resume operations. This occurs because the cache synchronization attempts to operate on an unset cache_ops pointer, leading to system instability (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

The fix involves enabling flat cache again to support resume operations. Additionally, numregdefaults_raw is necessary to read the cache defaults from hardware, as some registers are strapped in hardware and cannot be provided in software (NVD).
